Air Fryer Tuna Melts

  • Author: Lana
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water or oil, drained

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (use a Halal-certified brand)

  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (or regular mustard if preferred)

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, for added zest)

  • 1 small celery stalk, finely chopped (optional, for crunch)

  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped (optional, for extra flavor)

  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish (optional, for a hint of sweetness)

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 4 slices of bread (choose a Halal-friendly option, such as whole wheat, sourdough, or white bread)

  • 4 slices of cheese (Cheddar, Swiss, or any cheese of your choice; make sure it’s Halal)

  • Butter or olive oil spray (for greasing the air fryer basket)

  • Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish)

Ingredient Highlights

  • Tuna: The star of this recipe, providing protein and a hearty flavor that pairs perfectly with the creamy mayonnaise and cheese.

  • Mayonnaise: Adds richness and creaminess to the tuna salad, helping to bind everything together.

  • Dijon Mustard: A touch of Dijon mustard brings tanginess and depth of flavor to balance the richness of the tuna and mayo.

  • Cheese: The melted cheese is the crowning glory of the tuna melt, adding gooey, comforting texture and flavor.

  • Bread: A hearty, crusty bread is perfect for toasting in the air fryer. It holds up well to the filling and offers a satisfying crunch.

Instructions

Prepare the Tuna Salad:

  1. Mix the Tuna Salad: In a medium bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon juice (if using), celery, shallot, sweet pickle relish (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Set aside.

Assemble the Sandwiches:

  1. Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out the slices of bread on a clean surface. Generously spread the tuna mixture on one slice of bread. Top the tuna mixture with a slice of cheese, and then place the second slice of bread on top to form a sandwich.

  2. Prepare for Air Frying: Lightly butter or spray the top and bottom of each sandwich with olive oil or butter. This helps to achieve a golden, crispy finish when cooking in the air fryer.

Cook the Tuna Melts:

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3-5 minutes.

  2. Air Fry the Sandwiches: Carefully place the assembled tuna melts in the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches. Cook the sandwiches at 375°F (190°C) for about 7-10 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time. The bread should be golden brown and crispy, and the cheese should be melted and gooey.

  3. Check for Doneness: Once the sandwiches are crispy and golden, and the cheese is fully melted, remove them from the air fryer. Let them cool for a minute or two before cutting.

Serve:

  1. Cut and Serve: Slice the tuna melts into halves or quarters, depending on your preference. Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
