- 1 tbsp olive oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce (or salsa)
- 1/4 cup water
- 8 small flour or corn tortillas (halal-certified)
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 medium tomato, diced
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro (optional)
- Lime wedges, for serving (optional)
- Jalapeño slices, for serving (optional)
Homemade Taco Seasoning (Optional)
If you prefer to make your own seasoning, here’s a simple mix:
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
Prepare the Ground Beef Filling:
- Heat the Oil: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the chopped onions and sauté for about 2-3 minutes until softened and translucent.
- Cook the Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the pan and cook for another 30 seconds, stirring constantly to avoid burning.
- Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon or spatula. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until the beef is browned and no longer pink. Be sure to drain any excess fat from the beef.
- Season the Meat: Stir in your taco seasoning (or homemade seasoning mix) and cook for 1-2 minutes to toast the spices. Add the tomato sauce (or salsa) and water, stirring well to combine.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the sauce to thicken slightly. Stir occasionally.
Warm the Tortillas:
- Heat the Tortillas: While the beef simmers, heat your tortillas. You can either warm them in a dry skillet over medium heat for 30-60 seconds on each side or wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave for 20-30 seconds until soft and warm.
Assemble the Tacos:
- Fill the Tortillas: Spoon the seasoned ground beef mixture onto the center of each warmed tortilla. Be generous, but leave a bit of space at the edges to fold them.
- Add Toppings: Top each taco with your desired toppings, such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice. You can also add jalapeño slices for a little extra heat.
Serve and Enjoy:
- Serve: Arrange the tacos on a platter and serve with additional lime wedges and any extra toppings on the side.
