Pioneer Woman Sausage Gravy

  • Author: Lana
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Halal beef sausage (or Halal chicken sausage), crumbled
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper (or more to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a slight kick)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Ingredient Highlights

  • Halal Beef or Chicken Sausage: This is the base of the gravy, and it provides that savory, rich flavor that makes sausage gravy so irresistible. You can find Halal sausage at most Middle Eastern or international grocery stores.
  • Butter: Used to make the roux that forms the base of the gravy, creating a smooth, creamy consistency.
  • Flour: The flour thickens the gravy, giving it that rich and velvety texture.
  • Milk: Whole milk is recommended for a creamy gravy, but you can substitute any milk or milk alternative that you prefer.
  • Seasonings: Black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne give the gravy its perfect blend of savory and subtle heat. The cayenne is optional, but it does add an extra layer of flavor.

Instructions

Cook the Sausage

  1. Brown the Sausage: Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Halal beef or chicken sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon or spatula as it browns. Cook until it’s fully browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Once cooked, remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.

Make the Roux

  1. Melt Butter: In the same skillet, add the butter and melt it over medium heat. Once melted, sprinkle in the flour to create a roux. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon or whisk to combine the flour and butter, cooking for 1-2 minutes. This will create a smooth paste that will thicken your gravy.

Add Milk and Seasoning

  1. Pour in the Milk: Slowly pour in the milk while stirring constantly to prevent any lumps from forming. Keep stirring until the mixture starts to thicken and becomes smooth.
  2. Season the Gravy: Add black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir to combine and season with salt to taste. Let the gravy simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until it reaches your desired thickness.

Combine Sausage with Gravy

  1. Add the Sausage: Return the cooked sausage to the skillet with the gravy and stir to combine. Allow the sausage to heat through and for the flavors to meld, about 2-3 minutes.

Serve the Gravy

  1. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Pioneer Woman Sausage Gravy hot over freshly baked biscuits, toast, or even hash browns. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color and added freshness if desired.
