Scale
For the Bagel Base:
- 2 whole wheat bagels (or your choice of bagels such as plain, sesame, or everything bagels): The foundation for this dish, offering a chewy and satisfying base.
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (optional): To spread on the bagels before toasting, giving them a golden, crispy texture.
For the Cream Cheese Spread:
- 4 ounces cream cheese: Softened, this provides a rich and creamy spread for the bagels.
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice: To add brightness and acidity to the cream cheese mixture.
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped: Adds a herbaceous flavor that complements the salmon.
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional): A touch of sweetness to balance the savory flavors of the dish.
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste: For seasoning the cream cheese.
For the Toppings:
- 4 ounces smoked salmon: High-quality smoked salmon is key to this dish, providing rich, savory flavor.
- ½ red onion: Thinly sliced, for a slight sharpness and crunch.
- 1 medium cucumber: Thinly sliced, offering a fresh and cool crunch.
- 1–2 ripe tomatoes: Sliced, adding sweetness and juiciness to balance the richness of the salmon.
- Fresh herbs (optional): Such as dill, chives, or parsley for garnish.
- Capers (optional): For an added briny kick, enhancing the flavor profile.
Instructions
FIRST STEP: TOAST THE BAGELS
- Toast the Bagels: Start by splitting your bagels in half. You can lightly toast them in a toaster or on a grill pan for extra flavor. If you prefer a golden crust, you can spread a thin layer of butter on the cut sides of the bagels before toasting.
- Check the Toasting: Toast the bagels to your desired level of crispness. Whether you like them lightly golden or extra crunchy, ensure they are toasted evenly on both sides. Once done, set them aside to cool slightly while you prepare the spread and toppings.
SECOND STEP: MAKE THE CREAM CHEESE SPREAD
- Mix the Cream Cheese: In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, lemon juice, and chopped dill. Stir until the cream cheese is smooth and fully combined with the lemon juice and herbs. The cream cheese should be spreadable but thick enough to stay in place when applied to the bagel.
- Season the Spread: Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. If you like a little sweetness, add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup. Mix until smooth and set aside.
THIRD STEP: PREPARE THE TOPPINGS
- Slice the Veggies: Thinly slice the red onion, cucumber, and tomatoes. Aim for paper-thin slices to ensure they won’t overpower the other ingredients but still provide texture and flavor.
- Arrange the Smoked Salmon: Gently place the smoked salmon on a cutting board and use your hands to tear it into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to distribute across the bagel.
- Garnish with Herbs and Capers: If using, chop some fresh herbs like dill, chives, or parsley, and sprinkle over the smoked salmon for added flavor. You can also add capers on top of the salmon for a briny, savory bite.
FOURTH STEP: ASSEMBLE THE BAGELS
- Spread the Cream Cheese: Take the toasted bagel halves and generously spread the cream cheese mixture onto the cut sides. Ensure an even layer to balance the toppings.
- Layer the Toppings: On top of the cream cheese, layer the smoked salmon, followed by the thinly sliced onions, cucumbers, and tomatoes. If desired, add extra herbs or capers for garnish.
- Finish and Serve: Place the two halves together, or leave them open-faced for a more elegant presentation. Serve immediately while the bagels are still fresh and the flavors are at their peak.
