Spinach Puffs

  • Author: Lana
  • Total Time: 40minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh spinach (or 1 package of frozen spinach, thawed and drained)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (ensure it’s Halal-certified)
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • A tablespoon of fresh parsley (optional for garnish)

Ingredient Highlights

  • Spinach: A nutritious green vegetable, spinach provides a wealth of vitamins and minerals while adding a savory, earthy flavor to the puffs.
  • Puff Pastry: The puff pastry gives the Spinach Puffs their signature flaky, buttery texture. It’s the perfect vessel for the flavorful spinach mixture.
  • Cheese: The combination of ricotta and mozzarella cheeses adds creaminess and flavor, making the filling rich and satisfying.
  • Garlic and Herbs: The garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and nutmeg (optional) enhance the savory profile of the spinach filling and create a deliciously aromatic treat.

Instructions

Prepare the Spinach Filling:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the puffs from sticking.
  2. Cook the Spinach: If using fresh spinach, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the spinach and sauté for about 3-5 minutes until wilted. Once cooked, transfer the spinach to a colander and let it drain to remove excess moisture. If using frozen spinach, make sure it’s fully thawed and drained.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, combine the drained spinach, ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, black pepper, salt, and nutmeg (if using). Stir well to combine. The filling should be creamy and thick but easy to spoon into the pastry.

Prepare the Puff Pastry:

  1. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Use a rolling pin to gently roll it out to ensure it’s even. If using store-bought puff pastry, it should already be the correct size, but rolling it out a bit will help it to be more pliable.
  2. Cut into Squares: Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into squares of about 3×3 inches. This size will make perfect bite-sized puffs.

Assemble the Spinach Puffs:

  1. Fill the Pastry: Spoon a small amount of the spinach mixture onto the center of each pastry square. Be careful not to overfill, as the pastry will need to fold over the filling.
  2. Fold the Pastry: Gently fold each square into a triangle or rectangle, depending on your preference. Press the edges to seal the puffs and prevent the filling from escaping during baking.
  3. Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg and brush a light coat over the top of each puff. This will give them a golden, shiny finish when baked.

Bake the Spinach Puffs:

  1. Bake: Place the filled and sealed puffs onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the puffs are golden brown and puffed up.
  2. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the puffs cool slightly before serving. You can garnish them with a sprinkle of fresh parsley for an added touch of color and flavor.

Cut and Serve:

  1. Serve: These Spinach Puffs are best enjoyed warm. Serve them as appetizers, snacks, or alongside your main meal.
