Teriyaki Steak

  • Author: Lana
  • Total Time: 1hour 30minutes

Ingredients

Scale

For the Teriyaki Marinade:

  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce: This provides the savory base for the teriyaki sauce without being overly salty.
  • ¼ cup honey: Adds the perfect balance of sweetness to the marinade.
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar: For a slight tang and to help balance the sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar: Enhances the depth of sweetness in the marinade.
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil: Adds a nutty, aromatic flavor.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced: Provides a rich, aromatic base flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger: For a fresh, zesty kick that complements the sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch: To thicken the sauce slightly, giving it a nice consistency that coats the steak.
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional): For a little crunch and garnish.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper: Adds a mild heat and balances out the sweetness.

For the Steak:

  • 4 boneless rib-eye steaks (or your preferred cut of halal beef): Rib-eye is a great choice due to its tenderness and marbling, but feel free to use sirloin, flank, or any other cut you prefer.
  • Salt and pepper: For seasoning the steak.
  • Olive oil: For brushing the steak before grilling.

Optional Garnish:

  • Chopped green onions: For a fresh, crisp garnish.
  • Additional sesame seeds: For extra crunch and flavor.
  • Lime wedges: For a citrusy twist before serving.

Instructions

FIRST STEP: PREPARE THE TERIYAKI MARINADE

  1. Combine the Ingredients: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and black pepper. Ensure that everything is fully incorporated.
  2. Thicken the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water to make a slurry. Slowly add the slurry to the marinade while whisking. This will help thicken the sauce and give it a glossy finish.
  3. Marinate the Steak: Place the steaks in a large resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the teriyaki marinade over the steaks, ensuring they are well-coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for more intense flavor.

SECOND STEP: PREPARE THE GRILL

  1. Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high heat (around 400°F or 200°C). If using a grill pan on the stovetop, heat it over medium-high heat. Brush the grill grates with a bit of olive oil to prevent the steak from sticking.
  2. Prepare the Steak: Before grilling, remove the steaks from the marinade, allowing any excess to drip off. Pat the steaks dry with a paper towel and season both sides with salt and pepper.

THIRD STEP: GRILL THE STEAK

  1. Grill the Steak: Place the steaks on the preheated grill. Grill for about 4-6 minutes per side for medium-rare, or adjust the time to your desired level of doneness. For medium, cook for about 6-7 minutes per side, and for well-done, cook for 8-9 minutes per side.
  2. Baste with Marinade: While grilling, you can baste the steaks with the remaining teriyaki marinade for extra flavor. Brush it on after flipping the steak, but ensure you don’t brush it on too early to avoid burning the sugars in the marinade.
  3. Check the Doneness: Use a meat thermometer to check the doneness of the steaks. For medium-rare, the internal temperature should be around 130°F (54°C), for medium around 140°F (60°C), and for well-done around 160°F (71°C).

FOURTH STEP: REST THE STEAK

  1. Let the Steak Rest: After grilling, remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest for about 5-10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring the steak is tender and juicy.

FINAL STEP: SERVE AND GARNISH

  1. Slice the Steak: Slice the steaks against the grain to ensure the meat is tender and easy to chew.
  2. Garnish: Sprinkle the steak with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for added flavor and visual appeal. If you like a citrusy touch, squeeze fresh lime wedges over the steak before serving.
  3. Serve: Serve the Teriyaki Steak with your favorite side dishes such as steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, or a simple salad. This dish also pairs well with mashed potatoes or roasted potatoes.
